It’s the fastest-growing cause of disease and death in America. And it’s completely preventable.

* Nearly two out of every three Americans are overweight or obese.

* One out of every eight deaths in America is caused by an illness directly related to overweight and obesity.

Think of it this way: statistics tell us that of the 20 members serving on this subcommittee, at least two will die because of a completely preventable illness related to overweight or obesity. Because of overweight or obesity, two of you will spend less time serving your communities and enjoying your children and grandchildren.

America’s children are already seeing the initial consequences of a lack of physical activity and unhealthy eating habits.

Fortunately, there is still time to reverse this dangerous trend in our children’s lives.”

These statistics are STAGGERING. I was remarking something that I SAW. You seem to think that because I seem “cute and slender” that I’ve never struggled with my health, as do many people, daily. This means getting regular exercise and watching what we eat (something I have been on and off of for YEARS, as I’m sure many of us are). That said, there have been many, MANY periods in my life where my diet, lifestyle, genetics, weight and choices affected my HEALTH.

Noticing a condition which effects more people and puts more of a strain on the health care system than many others combined is hardly judgmental or “shitty”. Just because I’ve never dealt with cancer, AIDS, poverty or morbid obesity personally, technically, doesn’t make this a “us vs. them” or “me vs. you” thing. Just observing. That's all I can do. That being said, devoting a significant part of your blog to an occurrence that you've probably never experienced firsthand - namely, dealing with obesity, seems damned judgmental and frankly shitty. I'm disappointed in you for being so shortsighted.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
